Don’t give up the day job
A series of creative experiments in the workplace.
Oscar Wilde once wrote in a letter of reply to a would be writer seeking tips on how to be successful: “The best work in literature is always done by those who do not depend on it for their daily bread and the highest form of literature, Poetry, brings no wealth to the singer. Make some sacrifice for your art and you will be repaid but ask of art to sacrifice herself for you and a bitter disappointment may come to you.”
Many artists, musicians, writers, etc. have to work a normal day job in order to pay the rent and bills whilst they pursue their creative interests outside of work. This project incorporates a series of experiments inspired from my place of work, a typical everyday office, where my fascination with processes and repeated, mundane tasks, often provoke spontaneous creativity and inspire humour. Over the course of the next few months I will add more experiments to the list below. I hope to exhibit the culmination of these experiments in an exhibition nearer to the summer of 2014.
The planet fruit tea – A series of photographs portraying the unusual and rather beautiful looking stains left by fruit tea at the bottom of mine, and my work colleagues mugs.
Ten days of soup string theory – Documenting the strings of unidentified fibres that I find in the canteen soup where I work.
The famous works of Dali recreated using office equipment – One day this just sort of happened on my lunch break at work.
